October Screen

Due to my busy work schedule, I have been very slow to publish this last month. Therefore, my October screen is delayed until almost mid-October. Sorry about that!

My Screening Criteria:
  • Yield > 2.0%
  • Yield/10 Median Yield > 1.35
  • Chowder > 8
  • PE/5 Median PE < 1.0

Note: There is still a problem with Yahoo Key Stats for 5 yr Average Yield this month, so I used Guru Focus’ 10 Median Yield instead (with a higher threshold).

The screen is looking for companies with higher than average yields and lower than average P/E, with reasonable dividend yields and growth (with Chowder).

Next, I filtered with Credit with BBB+ or more as well as companies with no debt.

Based on the screen, we see the usual suspects from the previous months.

I need to balance up my positions on FAST and NOV so these are on the top of my list. ADM, EV & CMI are interesting - but I need to research these companies a little more. My positions on EMR, DOV and CAT are pretty full, so I will wait on these guys.

I am also interested on other companies in my portfolio that needs building up (i.e. GIS, etc), so i will keep an eye open for opportunities.

That’s it for now. Let me know what companies you are planning to buy.

  1. D4S,

Nice list --- I Know Bert loves ADM (the other diplomat) and he would be pumped if you started a position there.

Can't go wrong obviously, nice screener, best of luck!

    1. Lanny, thanks for your comments. You guys are killing it with your progress this year!
I just reviewed ADM. The price was better a few weeks ago - oh well. Let's see if we see another dip. I would like to add this company to my portfolio if possible.

  2. WMT's a good example of higher than avg yield, breaking the 3% ceiling recently. Nice screener, update us on what you're looking at or what you buy from this.

    1. Dividend Chimp,
Thanks for your comments. I agree WMT is a good example. I would be glad to add more, but it is a relatively large position in my portfolio. If the market stays depressed, I may get an opportunity to add more.

  3. Man, I was going to add more WMT, and UNP but they both have a run up. Especially UNP has already recovered. Dang!! I scanned CNBC, I saw Cramer mumbling it's not the time to buy LOL :).

    1. Vivianne,
Yes. The market did pull back a little. However, I think with the FED intervention with interest rates and other QE schemes being relaxed will cause further volatility. I think the low prices may stay for a while.
I always laugh about the comments we see on TV. There is no one strategy for everyone - so it is not easy to say don't buy (or don't sell). But, they all say these things. I guess it is good for the ratings.
